Excellent I want more! This is an excellent short story。So very well written with the perfect ending。 Obvious when you reflect on it, but keeps you guessing until the end。

Lesley Parker

I found this quite an interesting read。 Could almost be the beginning of a decent series。

I really enjoyed this short story featuring DS Gish, set around a very exclusive and incredibly expensive apartment block in London。 When the concierge is found murdered, suspicions fall on the residents。 As well as all being mega-rich, it seems they all could have some reason why they might have wanted the concierge dead。As the detectives start investigating and we learn more about each resident, I found myself really gripped by the story and keen to find out more。 It might be a short story but I really enjoyed this short story featuring DS Gish, set around a very exclusive and incredibly expensive apartment block in London。 When the concierge is found murdered, suspicions fall on the residents。 As well as all being mega-rich, it seems they all could have some reason why they might have wanted the concierge dead。As the detectives start investigating and we learn more about each resident, I found myself really gripped by the story and keen to find out more。 It might be a short story but there’s plenty happening and it’s certainly fast-paced! As always, I had no idea ‘whodunnit’ and would never have guessed in a month of Sundays!I don’t know if the author has any plans to write any more stories featuring DS Gish or if this is a one off, but I would happily read more featuring this sharp-witted and tenacious detective。 Small but perfectly formed, The Rise is a great short story perfect to while away a chilly afternoon。 。。。more

An excellent read with a surprise ending 。

Fiona

Good police procedural with a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming。 I haven’t read any Ian Rankin before。 I haven’t even watched Rebus - shock horror! Perhaps I should。

Jill Carroll

This was a bit odd。 Eighty plus pages of police procedural containing all the plot of a full length novel but very little else。 Propulsive, sure, but I had trouble caring about the undeveloped, opaque characters。

Emma

A gripping enough story with likeable protagonists。

Kindle book2。5⭐️

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Murder mysteries aren’t a usual genre for me。 Found it hard to keep track of so many people and names in such a short read。 Interesting twist at the end。

RAReasonably good story。 Police procedural with wealthy Arab and oligarch overtones, to give a London and not Edinburgh flavour。 A shrewd female detective who should be given more challenging cases, author permitting。

SVETLANA

DS Gish is called one night to a murder scene at The Rise - a posh London building where only wealthy people can afford an apartment。 This makes the investigation very hard, as the people in the building are not accustomed to police looking into their private lives。 This is a well-written short police investigation story with a very unexpected final。

Kind of crammedDecent story but it felt a bit crammed together to me。 Lots of characters made it feel quite busy。 The story was good enough and worked to satisfy my desire to read a short story before bed。 Medium so not a waste of time。

Amazon First ReadsA “who-dunnit” inside a modern high rise in London。 Flats where the wealthy from around the world live…。 For privacy & security? Or hiding secrets?

it's so difficult to rate this because it is a mystery and a short story, and to me, that is just an oxymoron。 It's just not a good medium for that genre。that being said, i found it on my kindle list, and wanted to give Ian Rankin a chance, as i don't think i've read him before, and i normally enjoy British authors, and like Scotland。well, it wasn't bad, and i will give the author another try, but it was never drawn out enough, and i didn't get to know the characters at all。 so, we'll see what h it's so difficult to rate this because it is a mystery and a short story, and to me, that is just an oxymoron。 It's just not a good medium for that genre。that being said, i found it on my kindle list, and wanted to give Ian Rankin a chance, as i don't think i've read him before, and i normally enjoy British authors, and like Scotland。well, it wasn't bad, and i will give the author another try, but it was never drawn out enough, and i didn't get to know the characters at all。 so, we'll see what he does with a regular novel。 。。。more

A 48-hour Police ProceduralReview of the Amazon Original Stories Kindle edition (via Amazon Prime First Reads) (October 1, 2023) in advance of the official release November 1, 2023。This is a fast-paced short story set in an exclusive high-rise apartment building in London, England。 It is therefore not set in the usual Tartan Noir world of Rankin's regular Inspector Rebus series and its offshoots。 I usually feel let down by the First Reads ARCs but with a veteran writer like Ian Rankin you are in A 48-hour Police ProceduralReview of the Amazon Original Stories Kindle edition (via Amazon Prime First Reads) (October 1, 2023) in advance of the official release November 1, 2023。This is a fast-paced short story set in an exclusive high-rise apartment building in London, England。 It is therefore not set in the usual Tartan Noir world of Rankin's regular Inspector Rebus series and its offshoots。 I usually feel let down by the First Reads ARCs but with a veteran writer like Ian Rankin you are in good hands, even if the setting is not his usual Edinburgh and its environs。The police inspectors arrive in the middle of the night when the building concierge / security guard is found murdered at the security desk。 Further investigation reveals a missing apartment key fob, a disabled security system, and yet another body in the trunk of a car in the apartment garage。 The building does not lack in suspects。 An over-extended real estate developer, the wife of a crime lord, a Russian oligarch, an Arabian princess, a down-on-her-luck actress, her stalker businessman, etc。It proceeds in a whirlwind of a police procedural where the detectives are kept on the chase for most of 48 hours until the surprise reveal of the motive and the culprits。 Trivia and LinksAmazon Prime First Reads advance reading copies (ARCs) are available to Amazon Prime subscribers。 They offer advance reads of books in Kindle eBook format one month before the date of official release。 The current month's selection is available here (Link goes to Amazon US, adjust for your own country or region)。 。。。more

A little lacklustre。。。This was one of my picks for Amazon's October 2023 First Reads and thought it sounded a good read。I like a short story, love a thriller and have never read anything by Ian Ranking before, so thought why not give this a go。All in all, I feel it was a little lacklustre in characterisation and plot。 I felt it was just a descriptive police procedural rather than a thriller。 I didn't really feel any suspense or tension throughout。 I did not expect the ending, but felt the final A little lacklustre。。。This was one of my picks for Amazon's October 2023 First Reads and thought it sounded a good read。I like a short story, love a thriller and have never read anything by Ian Ranking before, so thought why not give this a go。All in all, I feel it was a little lacklustre in characterisation and plot。 I felt it was just a descriptive police procedural rather than a thriller。 I didn't really feel any suspense or tension throughout。 I did not expect the ending, but felt the final pages rushing towards a conclusion。 A great premise for a book, but just an okay read in the end。 Maybe I will try some of the author's full length novels。 。。。more

A short but sweet story that wraps up nicely。 The story moved at a good pace and I didn't see the ending coming。 This is the first time I've read Ian Rankin's work and I really enjoyed it。 A short but sweet story that wraps up nicely。 The story moved at a good pace and I didn't see the ending coming。 This is the first time I've read Ian Rankin's work and I really enjoyed it。 。。。more

The RiseI can't believe I'm admitting this, but this is the first Ian Rankin story that I have ever read。 I do have a bunch of his books on my shelf, but I never got to them yet。 I'll be making a point to start reading them immediately。 This was a wonderful short story to start with! A short story concerning a death inn a high rise building。 Lots of switches。 Hard to keep track of where everyone was。 But the end came too quickly。

an interesting read, i had an inkling of the twist, but was still surprised when it was confirmed。 i would have enjoyed it more that it been broken up a bit more and the writing style wasn’t what i’m used to so i struggled to get into the story。 overall a fun short read。

CL

No deep mystery or real surprises, but a solid short story with clear characters and good detective work。
